Umlauts are funny, right?

We have a cat. We have a digital camera and internet access. It was only a matter of time before we made him into a lolcat.

Yes, but once a cat undergoes Umlaut it is no longer a 'cat', but a 'kitty'. (Umlaut, properly speaking, refers to the vowel shift that is seen in such word pairs as cat/kitty, man/men, old/elder(-est), goose/geese, mouse/mice, tooth/teeth, to fall/to fell, foot/feet, louse/lice, etc.) Whether the cat/kitty in question would spell its umlauted vocalizations with or without a diaeresis depends, of course, on whether the cat thinks in English or German.
